Take a new bag shopping...

As part of the 2008 Environment Week event, George Yard Shopping Centre launched its' new reusable bag to help shoppers and tenants alike......not to mention the planet.

"We all are aware that we need to reduce the toll we are taking on the planets resources," said Brenda Baker, Centre Manager of George Yard Shopping Centre" But it is sometimes difficult to understand how to help and how to make a difference. But we know that we need to stop using things wastefully; so cutting back on how much plastic we put into the environment is a difference we can individually make."

The stylish dark brown bag carries the new George Yard Shopping Centre eco-logo and the phrase "I'm saving my energy...for shopping".

Essex Wildlife Trust

George Yard became a corporate member of the Essex Wildlife Trust in 2007 and is pleased to have continued its membership since then.

We help plant trees rather than send Christmas cards these days!

Recycling

The Centre has been enabling recycling of a considerable proportion of the total waste produced on site for some years. Paper and cardboard are sorted out of the waste stream by tenants and centre staff. Plastic (largely soft sheeted plastic) is also separated, baled and taken by a recycling contractor. Taking paper and plastic out means a reduction of about 50% of the waste stream prevents it going to landfill.

Other elements of waste removed from the waste stream now include all electrical items and all light bulbs. All the remaining waste goes to a sorting site where it is mechanically and hand sorted removing about 50 – 75% of the waste before the balance goes to landfill.

Thus, we can claim to recycle up to 85% of our waste already.
